Putting Together The Father's Wedding Speech
While many people think the hardest wedding task for any father is to walk his daughter down the aisle, many fathers often struggle even more with writing the wedding speech they have to give at the wedding reception. Traditionally the father of the bride will be the first to offer his speech, because it was often the bride?s parents that paid for the wedding. While wedding costs today are not usually paid for completely by the bride?s parents, most receptions plan for the father of the bride to speak first. So, how does the father put together his wedding speech?
What Will You Say? Coming up with ideas for the father?s wedding speech is often the most difficult part. Some of the speech will need to come from the heart, while other parts can be more perfunctory. You can fill time by thanking the guests for joining you in celebrating the special day, thank those who helped in the planning, and make sure you acknowledge the groom?s parents.
The more emotional part of a father?s wedding speech should come in welcoming the groom to the family and sharing how much the bride means to you. This is the place in the speech where you may elicit ?oohs,? ?aaahs,? and a few tears.
A Little Advice? While your speech can be a combination of humor and emotion, there are some general guidelines for what to talk about and what to avoid in the father?s wedding speech. For instance, you want to be honest about how you feel without gushing too much about your feelings.
Also, you may want tell a funny or touching story about your daughter. However, be careful that the story is tasteful and doesn?t embarrass the bride too much. If you are getting sentimental make sure you practice several times before you give your speech. While it is fine for the wedding speech to bring about some tears, you should be able to still speak clearly through those tears. If you practice, you can avoid any sobbing due to the intense emotions of the day.
Finally, stay sober for your wedding speech. It is easy for family and guests to do a lot of drinking at the reception, but often that alcohol gets in the way of giving a good and touching speech. You may end up saying or doing something you will regret later. So, save the drinking for after the speeches are over.
Remember, the key to giving a good father?s wedding speech is to speak from the heart in a way that honors the bride and groom. When you are done offering the speech, make sure people know it is done by raising your glass and providing a toast to the newlywed couple.
